The poem is a narrative with great Gothic imagery that emphasizes the point from the narrator. My idea is that the narrator wants the readers to understand a different kind of world in literature. This form of poetry tells a story of Gothic nature and not to confuse it with anything else. The spirits within each act talk in vivid imagery with a gothic twist. Almost witch like. Fourth Spirit,"Where the slumbering earthquake Lies pillow'd on fire." Their is also religious allusions in the play in the form of metaphors. The spirits also speak in prophecy similar to the play Macbeth. "The star which rules thy destiny was ruled ere earth began by me..." (Seventh Spirit) The spirits talk to Manfred to let him know that he is not as important as he think he is. The remind him that they are superior because they are immortal.

I especially like the comparison to Macbeth--that might be interesting to pursue. It really is an important text for the making of Romantic Gothic.
